A question I often
get asked is "Are those stories you write true?"
The
honest answer is: "Yes they are; at least, that's how I remember
it happening." Which doesn't mean that everything you are about
to read happened exactly the way I wrote it. I have a better than average
memory, but I also have some old report cards that show that my memory
is far from perfect.
So as you settle
into the hammock (the preferred way to read just about anything), remember
that everything you're about to read might be true. Or might not. But
at least you can rest assured that the stories aren't lies or fabrications,
and that except for some obvious exaggerations, the way they are floating
around in my head is the way that they spilled out on paper.
A question that
doesn't get asked as often is "Are all of those people in your
stories real?" Yes, they are. And if that scares you...well, it
should. But just think--you're just reading about those people. I had
to grow up with them. If I lived to write about them, then surely you
will live through reading about them.
